Washington Kneeling in Prayer

About

American Village – Montevallo, AL

2019

The president and trustees of the American Village looked to Robert Shure, who they had been working with for years on sculpture projects, to design a new artwork. They were inspired by a painting by Arnold Friberg depicting George Washington praying on one knee and desired a sculpture with the same theme for their campus. The bronze figure of Washington is on one knee, hands clasped in prayer, and his face is raised up to heaven. Beside him rests his tricorn hat. He is depicted during the time he was Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. The statue is placed on the American Village’s Freedom Trail.
